It is widely used in hydraulic fracturing or fracking. Hydraulic fracturing is a technology where chemically treated water and sand are sent to bed rock under high pressure to fracture the rock. It increases the permeability of rocks and provides a seepage route to natural gas to seep into the pipe. This process takes place at depth of 5,000-10,000 feet below the surface. In this process 99.3% water is used which is about 5-10 million gallons of water per well. Here 0.7% other chemicals are used amongst them guar gum is major binding and stabilizing and forms about 50% of chemical portion.
