The most typical application of ammonium sulphate is as an artificial fertiliser for alkaline soils. An ammonium ion is released when it is placed into damp soil. This produces a little amount of acid, which reduces the soil's pH equilibrium. It also provides nitrogen, which helps plants thrive. Late spring or late summer is the best time to use ammonium sulphate. It's best to avoid using it in the late fall to avoid a burst of growth that could lead to winter kills and illnesses. After an application, it should provide for adequate growth through several mowings. Apply ammonium sulphate in 45- to 60-day intervals.
