Fertility for corn is designed to break down slowly at the root base, providing consistent nutrition to support germination and early growth. To avoid too much nitrogen, pre-planting fertilizers for maize should have NPK ratios of 1-4-0, 1-3-1, 1-3-3, or 1-1-1. This will guarantee that they grow robust stems and leaves as well as a healthy root structure. Corn is a heavy feeder that requires a lot of nitrogen to grow once it has established itself. A little amount of nitrogen, most, if not all, of the necessary phosphorus, and possibly some potassium should be present in the beginning fertilizer. Fertilizers are described as "any organic or inorganic, natural or manufactured item that delivers one or more of the chemical components necessary for plant growth." The three essential plant nutrients, nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, are found in most fertilizers used in agriculture.
