Chironji (pronounced "kihr-OON-jee") is a large Asian pear. These tiny fruits are the largest of all sweet pears, averaging 2 to 3 inches in length and weighing up to 1 pound. They have very little skin and are usually eaten when just ripe. On average, they will ripen five to six days after harvesting. Regular storing allows them to remain edible after two or three months. This type of storage will increase the shelf life by ten days or more. This tasty little Asian fruit, sometimes called the 'earth peach', crosses between a banana and an apple. They possess anti-inflammatory properties and have been used in Chinese medicine to support healthy lung function. We've selected this fermentable brown variety for its delightful aroma and slightly tart flavour.
