It is an annual herb cultivated for its leaves, stem, seed and calyxes. It is best grown in tropical and sub-tropical regions. The leaves are used extensively for animal fodder and fiber, but the swollen calyxes are the plant part of commercial interest. As the flowers fall off, the bright red calyxes swell. These are harvested by hand, dried, and sold whole into the herbal tea and beverage industry.
