The term PROBIOTICS originated from two Greek words meaning 'FOR LIFE' and contrasted with the term ANTIBIOTIC which means 'AGAINST LIFE' "A LIVE MICROBIAL FEED SUPPLEMENT WHICH BENEFICIALLY AFFECT THE HOST ANIMAL BY IMPROVING ITS INTESTINAL MICROBIAL BALANCE". The probiotic concept is that if sufficient lactic-acid producing bacteria can be introduced into the intestinal tract of animals at a time when the balance of microflora has swung in favor of pathogen during the stress or disease or when no lactic acid bacteria are present are present at birth or following antibiotic treatment, then digestive upsets can be minimized or overcome. The inclusion of probiotics in the animal feed regulates or enhances the microbial environment, allows the establishment of a healthy gastro-intestinal microflora, reduces digestive upsets, improves feed utilization and increases animal performance.
