Golden rice has been genetically modified to produce beta-carotene, a carotene that is not found naturally in rice. When beta-carotene is digested by the human body, it becomes vitamin A. The US Food and Drug Administration has declared Golden Rice, a staple food genetically modified to contain beta carotene, a precursor to vitamin A, safe to consume (FDA). The color of Golden Rice is created by the presence of -carotene, a human vitamin A source that accounts for around 80a 90 percent of all carotenoids in Golden Rice.
