Basmati rice comes in a variety of flavours. Jammu province, located on the India-Pakistan border in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir, has three basmati 370, basmati 385, and basmati Gujjar Chack regions. Muradabadi 6465 Extra Long Grain Rice, 1121 PK 385 Super Kernel Basmati Rice, and D-98 are three Pakistani basmati rice varietals. Scientists at the Indian Agricultural Research Institute in Delhi employed traditional plant breeding to create a hybrid semi-dwarf plant with many of the same characteristics as traditional basmati rice (grain elongation, fragrance, alkali content). Pusa Basmati-1 (PB1; commonly known as "Todal" because the flowers have awns) has a crop yield that is up to twice that of traditional varieties. Basmati rice has a wonderful scent.
