Strong market prices for oilseeds and yield improvements led to increased oilseed crush and push total oil meal production to 17.8 million tons per annum. Growing international demand for animal feed is also expected to push Indian oil meal exports to 5.6 million tons. Many varieties of oilseeds are cultivated in India. Among these, the major oilseeds are Soybean, Cottonseed, castor seeds, Groundnut, Sunflower, Rapeseed, Sesame seed, Copra, Linseed, Castor seed and Palm Kernels. Depending on the period of cultivation, the oilseeds are classified as Kharif Crop and Rabi Crop. The Kharif Crop that is dependent on the Monsoon is harvested around October-November each year.
