Hypoid gearings are used in power transmission products that are more efficient than conventional worm gearing. They are considerably stronger in that any load is conveyed through multiple teeth simultaneously. By contrast, bevel gears are loaded through one tooth at a time. Hypoid gears are a type of spiral bevel gear that are used to transmit rotational power between two shafts at right angles. Hypoid gears are often used for the output stage, where lower speeds and high torques are required. The most common application for hypoid gearboxes is in the automotive industry, where they are used in rear axles, especially for large trucks. The advantage of hypoid gearing is that the bevel pinion can be realized with a greater spiral angle because of the axis offset. This increases the overall coverage of the tooth. For this reason, hypoid gearboxes are capable of transmitting more torque than single helical tooth.
