It is insoluble in water, dilute acids, common organic solvents and oils. Partially soluble with swelling in dilute alkali, fine, white, odourless, edible and metabolically inert powder. It has excellent water absorptive, swelling and dispersion properties which make it useful for food, cosmetic and pharmaceutical preparations, particularly tablets and capsules.
