Chemical properties of Quick Lime Lumps Quicklime is also known as burnt lime and is manufactured by heating crushed and sorted limestone in a rotary or shaft kiln. Lmestone (CaCO3) is broken down to form quicklime (CaO) and carbon dioxide (CO2). It is then subjected to calcinations in a kiln where it is heated to very high temperature, approximately 1100 degrees Celsius. The high temperatures release carbon dioxide (CO2) from the stone, turning it into calcium oxide. The process takes about 24-36 hours. When the quicklime comes out of the kiln it is in lumps, grains and powder form. It is finally packaged for sale. However, if it comes into contact with water, it reacts violently and gives off heat to convert it into slaked lime.
