Conventional filtration means liquid directly passes through the filter membrane to enter the downstream, while large particles or molecules are trapped in the upstream or inside of the membrane, and small particles or molecules enter the downstream through the membrane under pressure action. The flow direction of the operating cube is perpendicular to the surface of the membrane, so it is also called "dead end filtration". The application of conventional filtration includes clarification and filtration, bacteria removal and filtration, virus filtering and so on. Tangential flow filtration means that the flow direction of liquid is parallel to the surface of the membrane. Under the action of pressure, only a part of liquid passes through the filter membrane to enter the downstream. This operation mode is called "cross flow filtration". As tangential flow continues to a scoura the membrane surface in filter process, so it effectively alleviates the accumulation of large particles and molecules on the membrane under this mode of operation, this makes this mode of operation unique in many applications. In the tangential flow filtration system, the material fluid is not forced to pass through a single path through the membrane as a dead end filtration. Instead, the fluid passes through the membrane surface repeatedly through the way of repeated re-circulation. The "cleaning", brought by pressure, reduces the accumulation of pollutants on the surface of the membrane. The flow of liquid produces shear force on the surface of the filter medium, which reduces the accumulation of the filter cake layer or the gel layer, thus ensuring the stable filtration speed. The target molecules with larger molecular weight than the film are retained, but small molecules and buffer solutions pass through the membrane. Tangential flow filtration can be used to separate large biomolecules from small biomolecules, capture cell suspensions, and clarify fermentation broth and cell lysate. It can be applied to a series of applications including protein chemistry, molecular biology, immunology, biochemistry and microbiology.
